India faces formidable challenges in meeting its energy needs and providing adequate energy of desired quality in various forms to users in a sustainable manner and at reasonable costs. India also needs to sustain a 8% to 10% economic growth to eradicate poverty and meet its economic & human development goals. To deliver a sustained growth of 8% through 2031, India would, in the very least, need to grow its primary energy supply by 3 to 4 times and electricity supply by 5 to 7 times of today’s consumption. By 2031-32 power generation capacity would have to increase to 778095 MW and annual coal requirement would be 2040 mt.
The energy challenge is huge and is of fundamental importance to India’s economic growth imperatives. Unfortunately, however, we have not been able to achieve power growth targets in the past. Even the 11th Plan target of 70,000 plus is presenting huge problems. Consequently, we have chosen the Theme of the Conference this year as:
“CHALLENGES OF MITIGATING POWER SHORTAGE”
Objective of the Forum
The Conference will concentrate on micro level practical issues which need urgent resolution. Hon. Minister of Power, Secretary Power and other top experts have agreed to address the FORUM. The highlight of the programme will be a CEO’s Round Table on `Meeting the 11th Plan Targets – Issues & Possible Solutions’. Mr. B.K. Chaturvedi, Member, Planning Commission has kindly agreed to Chair this Round Table and key players from both public and private sector will participate and share their views. In addition we will have “Plenary on Financing, Transmission, Trading, Open Access and Development of Merchants Plants”. We aim to identify real challenges of mitigating power shortage.
